I wasn’t lying.

Remember yesterday when I posted about that super awesome self-defense class and how it totally kicks ass?! Yeah, well it was the truth. My ass is totally kicked today. Quite literally my butt muscles are so sore, standing and sitting has become a gruntingly painful affair. Love it. I think I’ll sign up.

If you were pursuing the same forms I’m interested in and I wasn’t on such a limited income, I’d totally consider joining you… for nostalgia sake if nothing else. I hope you have fun. It’ll be interesting to see how much you remember from karate. I don’t think I have the mind for it, haven’t practiced any techniques, etc. Every once in a while I go around the kitchen practicing my lightning fast round kicks just for fun, but that’s about it. I also have a couple random kung-fu-like movements that I sometimes do with my hands for no reason. I’m sure it will always be a part of what defines who I am… but I may never return to regular practice. After our stint together with Mr. Croeni, here’s my brief history:

    1) I took about a month of Jiu Jitsu from a friend of the family who is a VERY accomplished practitioner. Didn’t learn much in that short period.
    2) I took a few classes at a local kung fu school. I quickly got bored, as I wasn’t learning directly from a Chinese master ;)
    3) My wife and I took a T’ai Chi class at a local rec. center. The teacher was pretty decent at T’ai Chi but had pretty much zero knowledge of its applications or meaning, so I lost interest after the class was over. I’d really like to continue in T’ai Chi, learning from a more qualified instructor. It is a great workout, and the movements are very beautiful.

One last thing… I always credit my skill in juggling a soccer ball (one of my favorite hobbies/exercises) to the skills I learned in karate… balance, focus, control, endurance, etc. Whenever I juggle, I think of each kick with intention and often perform kicks and stances that resemble martial arts… good stuff. Martial arts is so much fun!

Yo, Mego. It’s all about the Phil in philosophical… whatever that means. Do you remember me from the ole PC days… kicking and sparring in the gym? I have pretty fond memories of karate class with Mr. Croeni. I have long wanted to find him, but it seems he maybe purposely disappeared. I can’t find his name listed anywhere. I’d like to just sit down and talk with him sometime.
